Apr-2023Redesigning the AyuRythm App Onboarding ProcessProblem Statement: AyuRythm, a personal wellness app offering personalized content based on Ayurvedic principles, faced a significant issue with its onboarding process. Many users, unfamiliar with the technical Ayurvedic terms used during onboarding, found it confusing and frustrating. This lack of understanding led to a high drop-off rate, as users were unable to grasp the terms and prioritize their actions effectively.Final Design: The final design focused on simplifying the onboarding experience by reducing complexity and making the app more accessible to users unfamiliar with Ayurveda. Key changes included:- Simplification of Flow: The onboarding process was streamlined to make it more user-friendly and less overwhelming. The number of steps and tests required to access the app's features was reduced, allowing users to explore and discover the app's offerings more naturally.- Use of Known Terms and Words: To enhance accessibility, commonly understood terms were used instead of specialized Ayurvedic vocabulary. While traditional Ayurvedic terms were retained, they were given less prominence and accompanied by explanations to aid comprehension.- Exploratory Approach: The onboarding process was redesigned to be more exploratory, enabling users to learn about the app's features and offerings at their own pace.My Role: As the lead designer, I headed a team of three talented designers. My responsibilities included guiding the design team through the process, collaborating closely with developers and stakeholders, and ensuring the final product met user needs and expectations.Process: We employed a 5-day design sprint approach to address the onboarding challenges:1. Monday - Map: We defined key questions and created a product map to outline the user journey and identify pain points.2. Tuesday - Sketch: We brainstormed and sketched potential solutions, focusing on improving clarity and user experience.3. Wednesday - Decide: The team reviewed and combined the best ideas into a cohesive storyboard, outlining the new onboarding flow.4. Thursday - Prototype: We developed a realistic prototype, incorporating the selected solutions to test with users.5. Friday - Test: The prototype was tested with 10 customers, gathering feedback to refine and validate the design.Challenges: Key challenges included simplifying complex Ayurvedic concepts for a broader audience, ensuring users could complete the onboarding process without confusion, and personalizing the Ayurvedic experience for new users.Learning: The project highlighted the importance of iterative design and testing. It underscored the need for using familiar language to reach a wider audience and the critical role of simplifying onboarding processes to reduce drop-offs. Effective communication and collaboration with team members were also crucial in successfully executing the project.Exploration: The team explored various ways to make the app more accessible, ensuring that users who were not familiar with Ayurveda could still understand and navigate the onboarding process. This involved carefully balancing the inclusion of traditional Ayurvedic terms with clear explanations and accessible language.Conclusion: The redesigned onboarding process for the AyuRythm app successfully addressed the initial problems by simplifying the flow, using familiar language, and creating an exploratory, user-friendly experience. The project demonstrated the value of a structured design sprint approach, enabling quick iteration and validation of design solutions.
